The government publishes a few newspapers in Algeria, the most prominent being El Moudjahid, an official newspaper of the National Liberation Front, Horizons, a daily newspaper aimed at attracting younger readers, Ech-Chaab, a generalist daily in Arabic, and El Djoumhouria, a daily newspaper published in Oran, a major coastal city in Algeria.

Source of funding and budget
The government press doesn’t release information about its finances. According to local experts, the print media run by the government is financed primarily from commercial revenues, namely advertising sales. In 2022, a state fund allocation worth DZD 32m was given to the state-ruun print media in Algeria, according to our local expert interviewed for this report
Editorial independence
There are no editorial rules imposed by the government on its own print media. Yet, the government newspapers are known to have a clearly pro-governmental editorial policy, according to data collected by Media and Journalism Research Center through content analysis.
No domestic statute and no independent assessment or oversight mechanism that would validate the editorial independence of the government press in Algeria have been identified.
