Ownership and governance
Kampuchea Thmey Daily has been owned since 2020 by Hun Mana, the eldest of Hun Sen’s two daughters.
Source of funding and budget
Most of the newspaper’s funding comes from commercial sources, mainly advertising. Given the association of the newspaper’s owner with the Prime Minister, it is highly believed in Cambodia that the publication also accesses funds from the government; it’s very unlikely though that they would top 50% of their total budget, according to local journalists and experts.
Editorial independence
The link with the family of the Prime Minister Hun Sen is visible in the editorial line of the newspaper, which doesn’t, as a rule, criticize the Prime Minister.
No evidence of statutes that would protect the independence of the journalists working for Kampuchea Thmey Daily has been identified and the same applies to any independent assessment or oversight mechanism to validate its editorial independence.
