Radio Liban is one of the oldest Arab radio stations. Its main program is in Arabic, but it also broadcasts in foreign languages, including French, English and Armenian.

Radio Liban is run as a directorate within the Ministry of Information, in line with a media strategy approved by the government, according to local experts knowledgeable of this strategic document.

Source of funding and budget

Radio Liban is financed by a subsidy from the government, according to local journalists and experts. The station does not release information about its expenditures.

The station has been faced with massive financial problems, the latest figure about its budget floated publicly being a mere LBP 65m (US$ 4,300) a month.


Editorial independence

Radio Liban operates in line with an editorial strategy approved by the government and implemented by the Ministry of Information, which supervises the station’s activity, hence its editorial coverage is tightly controlled by the government.

No domestic statute and no independent mechanism that would validate the editorial independence of Radio Liban have been identified.
