The main publication of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Nhan Dan (meaning “People” in Vietnamese) was established in 1951 during the anti-French Resistance War. The newspaper now issues seven publications including Nhan Dan Daily, Nhan Dan Weekend, Nhan Dan Monthly and Thoi Nay, and the versions in Vietnamese, English and Chinese of Nhan Dan Online.

Ownership and governance

Nhan Dan describes itself as the central organ of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the voice of the Party, State and People of Vietnam. The management of the publication is selected by the party mostly from the party loyalists, according to experts and journalists specialized in the Vietnamese media.

Source of funding and budget

Nhan Dan publisher is funded through a combination of state subsidies, advertising and sales of newspaper copies. The newspaper doesn’t release information about its annual budget. The publisher is majority funded by the government through a state subsidy and all its commercial activities are run directly by the state, according to experts and journalists specialized in the Vietnamese media.

Editorial independence

Nhan Dan’s mission is to disseminate information about and cover in a positive manner the implementation of the Party’s guidelines and the state policies.

No domestic statute and no oversight mechanism that would validate the editorial independence of Voice of Nhan Dan have been identified.
