Corporacion Extremena de Medios Audiovisuales (CEXMA)

The Extremadura Audiovisual Media Corporation (CEXMA) is the public broadcaster in the region of Extremadura. It operates a television and a radio channel out of the city of Merida.

Ownership and governance

CEXMA was created through Law No. 3 of 2008 as a public corporation owned by the Extremadura region.

The highest governing structure at CEXMA is the Board of Directors whose nine members are appointed by the regional parliament in Extremadura. The Director General of the company is also appointed by the Extremadura Parliament on recommendation from the regional government.

Source of funding and budget

CEXMA is majority funded by the regional government of Extremadura. In 2022, it had a budget of €27.6m, the government subsidy accounting for almost all of it, according to an annual report released by the group.

Editorial independence

There is no evidence of systematic editorial control by the government at CEXMA.

There is no statute establishing the editorial independence of CEXMA.

CEXMA has an Advisory Council consisting of 17 members who are appointed by the government of the region of Extremadura based on proposals from government, trade unions, private enterprises, consumer groups, academic institutions and other organizations. The main function of the Advisory Council is to provide feedback about the broadcaster’s programming to the CEXMA Board of Directors (at least twice a year).
