Sudan TV is the official television broadcaster in Sudan with a history going back to 1962 when it launched experimental broadcasting. It is run by Sudan National Broadcasting Corporation (SNBC).

Ownership and governance

Sudan TV is run as a state department that is accountable to the Ministry of Information, which also makes all the decisions related to the broadcaster’s management. The head of the station is appointed and can be dismissed by the Prime Minister.

Source of funding And budget

Sudan TV operation is funded almost entirely through a state budget allocation, according to four experts in African broadcasting consulted for this study in March 2024. The broadcaster does not release information about its expenditures.

Editorial independence

Sudan TV is editorially controlled by the government, which dictates the editorial line of the station. The broadcaster is known for closely following the state’s policies and interests.

There is no domestic statute and no oversight or assessment mechanism in place at Sudan TV that would validate the broadcaster’s editorial independence.
