Voice of Vietnam (VOV)

The Voice of Vietnam (VOV) is the Vietnamese national radio broadcaster whose history dates back to 1945. The channel’s online platform webcasts all its radio channels and the television platform VOVTV. The station also runs Tieng Noi Viet Nam, a by-weekly newspaper with nationwide coverage.

Ownership and governance

VOV is regulated by a government decree (No.03/2018/ND-CP), which established VOV as a governmental agency subordinated to the Ministry of Information and Communications. The station’s strategy must be approved by the Government and Prime Minister.

In June 2021, deputy prime minister Pham Binh Minh announced the appointment by the government of Do Tien Sy, a member of the Party Central Committee and National Assembly deputy, as President of VOV.

Source of funding and budget

As a government agency, VOV is fully funded by the government, according to experts and journalists specializing in Vietnamese media.

Editorial independence

According to the government decree that established VOV, the station’s mission is to disseminate the Communist Party’s guidelines and the state legislation.

No domestic statute and no oversight mechanism that would validate the independence of VOV have been identified.
