Ownership and governance

Radio Bana is owned and directly governed by the Ministry of Education, which appoints its management and makes all editorial decisions related to the station’s activities.

Source of funding and budget

Radio Bana is funded by the Eritrean government, according to our latest information collected from journalists in the country.

Editorial independence

Like all media in Eritrea, Radio Bana does not have editorial independence, operating in line with instructions from the Ministry of Education. The staff are under extreme pressure. The government in the past has raided the channel’s offices and arrested some of its journalists, suspected that they supported private radio channels (airing from abroad), and took part in meetings where the government or its representatives were criticized.

No statute and no independent mechanism of assessing or overseeing the editorial independence of Radio Bana have been identified.
