According to Syrian journalists and academics living abroad interviewed for this report in May 2024, the Syrian Ministry of Information owns and runs Al Wahda Foundation and makes all the decisions related to the publisher’s management.

Source of funding and budget

There is no information about the Al Wahda Foundation’s financial situation, as the Syrian regime doesn’t generally release information about its administration. According to Syrian journalists and academics living abroad who were interviewed for this report in May 2024, the company is majority-funded by the government. It also generates some revenue through advertising.

The media outlets run by the Al Wahda Foundation follow an editorial line fully supportive of the government’s interests, according to Syrian journalists and academics living abroad who were interviewed for this report in May 2024.

There is no domestic statute, or independent assessment or oversight mechanism to validate the independence of the media run by Al Wahda Foundation.
