Ownership and governance
CODISA’s management is selected by people close to the President’s family. The station is owned by the Ortega family. An investigation by Confidencial, published in February 2022, described the ownership structure behind the company. Rafael Ortega Murillo, one of the President’s sons, controls CODISA.
Source of funding and budget
CODISA is a company majority funded by the Nicaraguan government, although it also generates funds from ads, according to local journalists in Managua interviewed for this report in June 2024.
Editorial independence
Editorially controlled by the government, the radio stations run by CODISA are openly embracing propaganda that supports the government of Nicaragua.
There is no domestic statute or independent assessment/oversight mechanism to validate the independence of CODISA’s radio stations.
