Ownership and governance

Kuwait Radio is owned and run by the Ministry of Information in Kuwait. The station is literally part of the ministry, operating as a ministry unit and fully staffed by ministry employees.

Source of funding and budget

Kuwait Radio is funded almost entirely through state subsidies in the Ministry of Information budget. In the fiscal year 2023-2024, the ministry received a state allocation of KWD 280.7m (US$ 912m), according to a state budget document.

Editorial independence

As a ministry agency, Kuwait Radio follows a set of editorial rules imposed on the station by the ministry. The Ministry of Information provides the station’s management with strict instructions on how to cover every possible theme, especially those related to politics, according to our journalists and scholars based in Qatar interviewed for this report in May 2024.

During the latest round of research, no domestic statute that would establish Kuwait Radio’s independence was identified.
