Ownership and governance

Togo-Presse is printed by Editogo, a state-owned publishing house subordinated to the Ministry of Communication and Media. According to information gathered from a journalist in Editogo, the government appoints the publisher’s management.

Source of funding and budget

Togo-Presse generates funding from sales of copies and advertising but also receives a significant state subsidy, which accounts for more than 50% of its total budget, according to estimates from two local experts interviewed for this project in May 2024.

Editorial independence

There are no provisions obliging Togo-Presse to favor the government. Still, indirectly, through funding and control of the newspaper’s management, the government has full control over the newspaper’s editorial coverage, according to information gathered from local journalists in May 2024.

There is no statute and no oversight or assessment mechanism that would validate Togo-Presse’s editorial independence.
