The Kazakh government operates several print media outlets, the most important of which are Egemen Kazakhstan, Kazakhskaya Pravda (in Russian), and Kazak gazetteri, which publishes six magazines (Ana tili, Tenge monitor, Uygur avazi, Akikat, and Urker).

Source of funding and budget

According to local experts interviewed for this report in May 2024, government-run print media are mostly financed through state budget subsidies.

Editorial independence

All government-run print media operate in accordance with a set of state regulations that require these outlets to promote the policies and interests of the Kazakh government.

There is no domestic statute law and no independent evaluation or oversight mechanism for government-run print media to validate the editorial independence of these outlets.
