The Communist Party of Vietnam’s primary publication, Nhan Dan (meaning “People” in Vietnamese), was established in 1951 during the anti-French Resistance War. The Nhan Dan publisher is financed through a diversified revenue stream comprising state subsidies, advertising, and sales of newspaper copies. The newspaper does not disclose information regarding its annual budget. The publisher is primarily financed by the government through a state subsidy, and all its commercial operations are managed directly by the state, according to experts and journalists specializing in the Vietnamese media interviewed for this report in June 2024.
Editorial independence
Nhan Dan’s stated objective is to disseminate information about and provide positive coverage of the implementation of the Party’s guidelines and state policies.
To date, no domestic statute or oversight mechanism has been identified that would validate the editorial independence of Voice of Nhan Dan.
