Thanh Nien is a Vietnamese-language newspaper based in Ho Chi Minh City. Previously, the company operated an English-language publication, Vietweek, which was discontinued in 2016.

Thanh Nien is the official publication of the Vietnam United Youth League, which is affiliated with the Communist Party. The League serves as a training ground for future leaders of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

As indicated by the journalists and experts interviewed for this report in June 2024, the financial affairs of the newspaper are subject to strict control by the Communist Party, in line with the regulatory framework applicable to all media in Vietnam.

Thanh Nien is an official outlet of the Vietnam United Youth League. Its editorial line is shaped and controlled by the Communist Party, according to experts and journalists specialized in Vietnam interviewed for this report in June 2024.

To date, no domestic statute and no independent oversight mechanism to validate the editorial independence of Thanh Nien has been identified.
