Ownership and governance

Originally founded as Austar International Media Group (AIMG) by businessman Tommy Jiang, the enterprise began with the operation of Melbourne’s Chinese-language radio station 3CW. Over the years, it expanded significantly, establishing a string of radio outlets across Australia and abroad, alongside several weekly and daily Chinese-language newspapers.

China Radio International (CRI), a state-controlled broadcaster in China, holds a 60 % controlling interest in CAMG via Guoguang Century Media Consultancy.

Source of funding and budget

Despite exhaustive inquiry, no direct evidence has emerged indicating that CAMG receives funding from the Chinese government. Nonetheless, local analysts express skepticism, suggesting such media enterprises would struggle to sustain themselves without state subsidies.

Editorial independence

Interviews with media experts knowledgeable of the media in China conducted in March 2024 and May 2025 revealed a widespread belief that CAMG was founded to disseminate Chinese government propaganda, operating without any statutory guarantee of editorial independence or an independent oversight mechanism.
