Ownership and governance

VietNamNet, stylized as VNN, is an influential online news outlet in Vietnam, operating under the auspices of the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC). However, a major reorganization reshaped this landscape: on 18 February 2025, the MIC was dissolved and merged into the newly established Ministry of Science, Technology and Communications (MSTC). Concurrently, oversight of press licensing and content regulation was transferred to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, which now oversees the Press Bureau and related media operations.

Source of funding and budget

Although VietNamNet does not publicly disclose its annual budget, it remains a budget-supported entity as part of the former MIC, and now under MSTC, drawing on state resources. . In recent years, it has supplemented funding through advertising, yet such revenue sources still fall short of accounting for more than half of its finances.

Editorial independence

VietNamNet, as a state-run publication, does not exercise editorial autonomy. The Ministry, formerly MIC, now MSTC, wields full editorial control, shaping narrative and content.

No statutory safeguards or independent oversight mechanisms exist to guarantee editorial freedom, and the Press Bureau’s reassignment to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in early 2025 underscores the tightening grip on media control.
