Télam was Argentina’s national news agency. Established in 1945 as Telenoticiosa Americana (Télam), the agency back then had mixed ownership, including private and state capital, and was trying to offer an alternative to the US agencies Associated Press (AP) and United Press International (UPI).
In March 2024, the government of Javier Milei, who had been appointed President of Argentina a year earlier, ordered the closure of Télam. The agency was transformed into a state-run advertising agency, and its news production operation was folded. However, a group of journalists from the agency continued to report and set up a digital platform of their own to be able to publish their work. As a result, Télam, as a state-run newswire, ceased operations.
