Saigon Times Group
The Saigon Times Group was founded on 4 January 1991 as Thời báo Kinh tế Sài Gòn, a Ho Chi Minh City business weekly launched three years into the Đổi Mới reforms, and it built its reputation on economic analysis at a time when few Vietnamese publications attempted it. It grew into a multi-title publishing house, adding the English-language Saigon Times Weekly and Saigon Times Daily, the consumer title Sài Gòn Tiếp Thị and the technology paper Thời báo Vi tính Sài Gòn, and launched its online edition on 3 January 2008. Under the national press planning programme, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee reorganised the title in April 2021 as Tạp chí Kinh tế Sài Gòn, a public service unit directly under the People’s Committee; it had previously operated under the city’s Department of Industry and Trade. Alongside its publishing it ran the Saigon Times CSR awards programme, whose seventh edition in 2025 recognised 40 companies. Its contributors included economists writing from outside Vietnam, and it was regarded within the profession as among the country’s more substantial economic publications.
The closure came through the consolidation of Ho Chi Minh City’s press. Decision 863-QĐ/TU of the city Party Committee, issued on 9 June 2026, reorganised eleven city press organisations: Sài Gòn Giải Phóng, Tuổi Trẻ and the city radio and television broadcaster became constituent press organisations of the new Ho Chi Minh City Press and Radio-Television Agency, while eight others were ordered dissolved. Tạp chí Kinh tế Sài Gòn was among the eight, together with Người Lao Động, Phụ nữ Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh, Pháp luật Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh, Giáo dục Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh, Du lịch Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh, Doanh nhân Sài Gòn and Khoa học phổ thông. The final Vietnamese print issue, number 1,854, appeared on 25 June 2026 carrying a farewell editorial thanking readers, the business community, contributors and advertisers, and the final English-language Saigon Times Weekly was published the same day. The digital editions at thesaigontimes.vn, english.thesaigontimes.vn and sgtt.thesaigontimes.vn stopped publishing on 30 June. Of the eleven organisations covered by the decision, which employed 2,613 people including 553 at the eight ordered dissolved, Sài Gòn Giải Phóng was the only newspaper to retain a print edition; Tuổi Trẻ continues within the new agency as an electronic newspaper.
