State Media Monitor
Regional Overviews
Every year, State Media Monitor publishes an overview of state and public media in each of six regions: who funds them, who owns and governs them, and who decides what they publish. The archive holds 36 overviews, from June 2021 to the latest edition.

How the overviews workUpdated every cycle since 2021.
Each overview analyses the state and public media mapped in its region in that cycle. Every entry is assessed against three criteria, funding, ownership and governance, and editorial control, and placed in one of the seven categories of the State Media Matrix.
Classifications follow the evidence available in each cycle. New accounts, appointment records or a change of government can move an entry to another category or out of the mapping, so figures in older editions may differ from later ones. The Global Study brings the regional findings together each year.
