Operating

Not closed; continues as a foundation

Removed from active SMM coverage in September 2026 following a scope review. RNW Media continues operating as a media-development foundation. Its historical connection to Radio Netherlands Worldwide is retained here for reference.

What it was

Radio Netherlands Worldwide, the Dutch international public broadcaster from 1947 to 2012, which the historical entry covered.

What it is now

A media-development foundation that supports and trains other media organisations, many independently owned. Government grants alone do not make it a state or public media outlet.

State Media Monitor is a project of the Media and Journalism Research Center, a research institute that specializes in carrying out media research globally. This website features the most complete state and public media database ever built. Collection of data for the State Media Database has been carried out since 2004. During this period, more than 600 researchers have participated in conducting research that has been used to create this database as part of various projects including Television Across Europe, Mapping Digital Media and the ongoing Media Influence Matrix. A consortium of experts led by the Media and Journalism Research Center carries out monitoring of the media outlets featured in the database. An updated Overview is published every year in September-October. For more information about the project and contacts, visit Media and Journalism Research Center (MJRC) website.
