V4NA

Removal from the State Media Monitor database in 2026

V4NA Ltd, the UK-registered company operating the English-language news site V4NA, is removed from State Media Monitor’s active database following Hungary’s change of government in April 2026.

Previously classified Captured Private (CaPr), V4NA belonged to a media ownership network associated with Viktor Orbán’s governing Fidesz party. Investigations found that it selected and repackaged news aligned with the government’s positions for extensive republication by Fidesz-linked Hungarian outlets. Those historical links remain documented, but no continuing editorial control involving the incumbent state authorities has been established.

Ownership and previous capture

V4NA Ltd was incorporated in London on 31 December 2018. Reuters reported in April 2019 that New Wave Media Group, then part of the KESMA media network, held 57 per cent of the company, Árpád Habony’s Danube Business Consulting held 40 per cent, and Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky retained approximately 3 per cent. New Wave was absorbed into Mediaworks in 2022.

An Átlátszó investigation in 2022 found that V4NA’s editorial work was carried out in Budapest rather than by the large London-based correspondent operation it advertised. Its output consisted mainly of selected and rewritten reporting from other sources. Monitoring identified approximately 3,050 V4NA reports republished by KESMA-affiliated outlets over roughly a year ending in July 2022, especially in Magyar Nemzet and regional newspapers. The investigation also reported accumulated losses exceeding GBP 1.5 million at the end of 2021 and an unidentified lender. A verified figure for direct Hungarian state funding of V4NA has not been established.

What changed in 2026

The election of 12 April 2026 removed Fidesz from national government. The former republication operation had already diminished. V4NA’s English-language site remained online but published only five visible articles after May 2026, the latest dated 25 August. The company remains active in the UK. Although it faced a compulsory strike-off notice in September 2025, that action was discontinued in November. Its filing history includes a March 2026 confirmation statement and micro-company accounts filed on 1 April 2026 for 2025. Those accounts do not disclose detailed turnover or funding sources.

Why V4NA is removed

V4NA’s Captured Private classification was based on its links to the then governing Fidesz network and the documented use of its material across media aligned with that government. Fidesz is now in opposition, large-scale republication is no longer evident in the sources checked, and no system of editorial direction or financing by the incumbent Hungarian authorities has been established.

Removal does not mean that V4NA has become editorially independent. Its current ultimate ownership and financing remain insufficiently transparent, its remaining output retains its earlier thematic orientation, and no independent assessment of editorial autonomy has been published. The change concerns the documented relationship with state power, not the quality or independence of the journalism.
