Ownership and governance
CAMG previously operated as Austar International Media Group (AIMG), a company founded by Tommy Jiang, a Chinese businessman. At the outset, Austar operated the radio station 3CW in Melbourne. Since that time, the company has undergone significant expansion, operating a network of radio stations in Australia and other countries around the globe, as well as several weekly and daily Chinese-language newspapers. The company runs numerous additional media outlets in a number of countries, the identities of which have yet to be determined.
China Radio International, a state-controlled media outlet in China, owns a 60% stake in CAMG through the company Guoguang Century Media Consultancy.
Source of funding and budget
Despite our best efforts, we have been unable to uncover any evidence of Chinese government funding for CAMG. Our local experts and journalists believe that such media outlets can only operate with state subsidies.
Editorial independence
Local experts and journalists interviewed for this report in March 2024 have indicated that CAMG was established with the goal of disseminating Chinese government propaganda. As a result, it lacks a statute establishing its editorial independence and an independent assessment/oversight mechanism to validate it.
